When you initiate a Background Check with Intelius, you will receive a report which could include the individual’s criminal record, marriage and divorce history, lawsuits they have been involved in, bankruptcies, liens against them, and more. Your Background Check may also include other basic People Search information, such as full name, birthday, addresses, and more.

Believe it or not, almost all of this information is public record by law, and is available to anyone who is willing to make the effort to search for it. Some jurisdictions make it incredibly simple, and have dedicated web portals that allow you to search. Others are stuck in the paper age, and often require an on site search in the county courthouse. This can be done by using a “court runner”, as well.

Unlike simple web searches, our background checks probe deeper into local, state and federal courts, public utilities, private business records, the criminal justice system, social media profiles and other sources. While you might try to find this information on your own, piecing all of those together would be very costly and time consuming. Our basic background checks are highly in-depth and may include:

If an individual has pleaded guilty or been found guilty of a sexual crime, they are required to register as a sex offender. This database is maintained by the U.S. Department of Justice and it’s completely free to use. If you don’t know the person’s name, like a new neighbor, you can even enter your address and see if there are sex offenders living within three miles.
Portugal's criminal record system is an electronic database manned and maintained by Portugal's Direcção Geral da Administração da Justiça (General Direction for the Administration of Justice, DGAJ).[73] The system contains the records of Portuguese citizens that reside in Portugal, Portuguese nationals that live abroad and any foreign citizens that reside within Portugal.[73] Disclosure of an individual's criminal record is allowed at the request of the individual; themselves, or a third party with written consent of the individual. For example, an employer may request to see their possible employee's criminal record with their consent. However, the application must be made in person.[73] The certificate regarding criminal records in Portugal is called a "certificado do registo criminal" (certificate of criminal registration) which conveys whether an individual has a criminal record. An extension of this is a more detailed certificate regarding an individual's criminal activities which provides evidence for an individual to be employed in a job where they have access to large sums of cash, need high security clearance or supervise children.[73] This particular certificate is granted in a similar way to Australia's Working With Children Check, which supplies an employer with information regarding any previous criminal activity and ensures that convicted criminals are not employed in the same areas where they may have previously committed crimes.[73][85] Applications for the certificates can be made through several channels, there is a central repository for criminal records located in Lisbon, alongside a vast selection of regional courts and their administration services throughout Portugal that can provide individuals with certificates and for Portuguese nationals residing overseas, applications can be made through embassies and consulates.[73] However, none of the channels through which the certificates are available provide translation services, and therefore the certificate produced is always written in Portuguese, even when produced by an embassy in a non-Portuguese-speaking state.[73]
In Belgium, there is a national central criminal record system which records, keeps and modifies data related to penal decisions. The criminal record system is maintained by the Federal Public Service Justice.[5] The criminal records held within the central system contain the following data: criminal record number; name, surname and given name; date and place of birth; gender; residence; profession; nationality; court; number of judges; degree of jurisdiction; reference, number and date of judgement; date of transmission to central criminal record; sentence pronounced, place and date of the criminal acts.[6] The central system contains records of

A chapter 13 bankruptcy is filed when an individual’s income is too high to qualify for chapter 7. This type of bankruptcy allows the individual to retain their assets and property while repaying the debt under a court’s supervision. The advantage of this kind of bankruptcy is it allows the individual to have the repayment terms determined by the court rather than the creditors.

Most prisons in the United States adhere to a daily routine the prisoners have to follow: morning alarm followed by breakfast, breaktime/work time, prayer time, time for prison and state programs, lunch, time off/work time, dinner and lights out. Each prison decides in which times during the day prisoners will perform the schedule above in accordance to the facility's security level, population and needs.
In Cyprus, criminal records are held by the Criminal Investigation Office of Cyprus Police[29] which forms part of the Republic of Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order. A Clear Criminal Record Certificate or existing Criminal Record can be requested by individuals through application to the Criminal Investigation Office. Applications can be made in person at the Central Police Station in Nicosia. Criminal records in Cyprus are maintained for life.

While not officially a criminal history repository, the National Driver Register (NDR), operated by the Department of Transportation, maintains information on drivers regarding suspended licenses. The NDR maintains a database of information posted by individual states as mandated by federal law. All drivers who have had their licenses suspended for any reason (including suspensions resulting from several successive minor traffic violations: Massachusetts suspends for three separate speeding tickets over a six-month period) have that information posted by state Registry of Motor Vehicles offices to the NDR.

The criminal record system in Luxembourg is maintained under the authority of the State Prosecutor General. It contains information about convictions from Luxembourg criminal courts and, under certain conditions, foreign courts.[67] Criminal records have two parts, Bulletin no 1 which contains the complete statement of convictions of a person living or working in Luxembourg, and Bulletin no 2 which contains all convictions with the exception of suspended criminal sentences to prison for less than six months.[68]

Candidates who are applying for jobs that require financial responsibility are often screened based on their credit scores and financial histories. Additionally, public records and professional listings compiled during background checks can help employers confirm a candidate’s work history and qualifications, making it easier to spot false information on a CV.

Employers may investigate past employment to verify position and salary information. More intensive checks can involve interviews with anybody that knew or previously knew the applicant—such as teachers, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and family members; however, extensive hearsay investigations in background checks can expose companies to lawsuits. Past employment and personal reference verifications are moving toward standardization with most companies in order to avoid expensive litigation.
In fact, the service’s reports provide many of the basic pieces of information a background check should, including relatives, addresses, criminal history, court judgements, bankruptcies and assets. In addition, Intelius is one of the few background check services that lists educational history in its reports. This gives you another data point to use to get ahold of someone you’ve lost touch with. Intelius’ reports are easy to read and have a unique spider graph that shows how your subject is connected to relatives, jobs and other parts of their life. A background check through Intelius costs $49.95, which is the highest price we saw, though the company shares that distinction with several other services. A monthly subscription costs $29.95 and may be a better option. However, you need to remember to cancel your subscription when you are done using it. You can purchase a people search report, which doesn’t include information about criminal history and other legal matters, for $3.95. One of Intelius’ drawbacks is you can’t download the reports you purchase.
Background checks can cost between $40 and $50 each. Before you spend that much money, you’ll want to know if a service provides correct information. To gauge accuracy, we purchased reports for three people. We chose to look at multiple reports because much of the information comes from public records, and it can vary depending on the state your subject lives in.
Arrests that do not lead to an official finding of guilt, i.e. a conviction or the acceptance of a caution, are not considered part of a person's criminal record and are not typically disclosed as part of the process. However, an enhanced disclosure may include such additional information, which is supplied at the chief police officer's discretion. Enhanced disclosures are typically used to screen applicants for positions such as police officer, social worker, teacher which involve contact with vulnerable groups and children.
The amount of information included on a background check depends to a large degree on the sensitivity of the reason for which it is conducted—e.g., somebody seeking employment at a minimum wage job would be subject to far fewer requirements than somebody applying to work for a law enforcement agency such as the FBI or jobs related to national security.
