Unlike the handwritten criminal records of the past, nowadays these types of files are kept in computer databases. All police agencies that make arrests keep a record of them in their computer database. In addition to the police databases, each state keeps information on arrests and convictions in repositories according to their own guidelines. Under the Freedom of Information Act (FIOS), US residents can view their criminal records that become public records after they are documented.
In New Zealand, criminal records are administered by the Ministry of Justice. Under the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Act 2004, records are automatically hidden from the public for less serious offences, if the individual has had no convictions for at least seven years and meets the other criteria of the act. An individual can request either their current (Clean Slate) or complete criminal record through the Ministry of Justice, or provide authorisation for a third party (e.g. employer) to view the current record. It is illegal, with some exceptions, for a third party to request a complete criminal record.[82]
There is no record of dismissed cases or verdicts of not guilty.[6] To access their own criminal record, a person can seek it from their local police authority or send a written request to the Federal Public Service Justice. In terms of public access to criminal records, the following persons and judicial and administrative bodies may be able to gain access to records through the Federal Public Service Justice.

The Traffic Records Unit is the central processing location for all accidents handled by Louisiana Department of Public Safety and State Police. The reports are processed by scanning the document into an "image" file and indexing it to allow electronic retrieval. Requests are received from the public, insurance companies, and attorneys for copies of the reports. These copies are available online at www.lsp.org and at each Troop.
LACCH information is based completely on the fingerprint submission made at the time of arrest/booking. The best and most timely method to submit arrest information is through AFIS. The criminal history record can also be manually updated when the Bureau receives inked fingerprint cards from Sheriff's Offices and Police Departments not currently using AFIS.
After the Seychelles, the U.S has the highest per-capita incarceration rate in the world at 698 people incarcerated per 100,000 people. In 2013, 2,220,300 adults were incarcerated in county jails and state and federal prisons in the US according to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). In addition to these 2 million inmates, a total of 4,751,400 adults were on parole or prohibition in 2013.
What people typically think of as background checks are performed by specialty consumer reporting agencies. Much like your credit report, federal law entitles you to access this information once a year. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends looking at your report before applying for a lease or insurance. Get a report if a job you’ve applied for asks for authorization so you can see if you’ve been a victim of identity theft. Looking at the report gives you the chance to spot errors and dispute them.
Many background check website services advertise their background check, court records, and other services as free services. However, to compile an arrest record report or any other background check report for that manner, costs money. There is always a free when you pull an arrest record report. The search may be free, but in order to pull a complete report, you will have to sign up for a membership. Arrest Records can be obtained for free on your own, but requires a lot of work to find the appropriate court records, or arrest records you are looking for. Arrest records can show up on background check reports when you perform a people search or a background check on someone. Convictions, felonies and other related court documents may also show up on a background check report, but this varies from person to person.

If a consumer report is used as a factor in an adverse hiring decision, the applicant must be presented with a "pre-adverse action disclosure," a copy of the FCRA summary of rights, and a "notification of adverse action letter." Individuals are entitled to know the source of any information used against them including a credit reporting company. Individuals must also consent in order for the employer to obtain a credit report. Pre-employment credit reports do not include a credit score. A pre-employment credit report will show up on an individuals credit report as a "soft inquiry" and do not affect the individual's credit score.[citation needed]

A person may be required to undergo a criminal record check for a variety of reasons, including employment screening, volunteer work, preparing for a court appearance, visa applications, firearms licencing, or to satisfy a statutory requirement. Individuals can obtain a national criminal history through two ways:
Google Yourself: Searching for yourself is not as narcissistic as you might assume. You can only figure out what needs improving by seeing what is easily accessible about you. Think of it this way – by Googling your name, you’re only doing what potential employers are going to do anyway. It allows you to evaluate what is good for them to see and what you can better manage. Ericksen even recommends setting up Google Alerts so you can track every time you are mentioned on the internet.  
In Chile, citizens can request their own criminal records at the Civil Registrations office or the Registro Civil.[24] According to the Article 19 N°16 of the Constitution of Chile, an employer cannot discriminate based on anything else but personal capabilities to perform at the job offered.[25] One can eliminate one's criminal records by a voluntary checkup, providing your signature two years for first offenses, or five years for more. A person must be complaint of the requisites provided by the law No. 409.[26]
