There has been a growing movement on the web to use advertising-based models to subsidize these checks. These companies display targeted ads next to the reports delivered to landlords or employers. Some of the reports provided by these pay sites are only expanded versions of a basic people search providing a 20-year history of addresses, phone numbers, marriages and divorces, businesses owned and property ownership. Usually, these sites will also provide a nationwide criminal report for an added charge.
In the United States, you can file a lawsuit for just about any reason, which has resulted in a high percentage of frivolous lawsuits. As such, finding a civil lawsuit on a background check report can be a red flag for a number of reasons, especially if the lawsuit was filed by the person. That said, it may also mean nothing. In the United Kingdom, checks on a person's criminal record are undertaken by the Disclosure and Barring Service (in England and Wales), Disclosure Scotland (Scotland and basic Disclosure for all the UK) and Access Northern Ireland, all of which have partial access to the Police National Computer (PNC) which holds the definitive record. The ACPO criminal records office was founded in 2006, and it has the role of managing criminal record information and improving links between criminal records and biometric information.[97] These records are not publicly accessible and cannot be viewed without the subject's consent, although in some cases an employer might make such consent a condition of employment, especially if the employee is to work with children or other vulnerable people. Think of it this way – by Googling your name, you’re only doing what potential employers are going to do anyway. It allows you to evaluate what is good for them to see and what you can better manage. Ericksen even recommends setting up Google Alerts so you can track every time you are mentioned on the internet.  
The FBI’s CJIS Division will authenticate U.S. Department of Justice Order 556-73 fingerprint search results for international requests by placing the FBI seal and signature of a Division official on the results, if requested at the time of submission. Finding people for free on LinkedIn requires you create your own profile, and it works best if you fill out your profile completely. In the My Network tab, the site recommends others' profiles based on your own profile – schools you've attended, industries you've worked in, companies you've worked for, mutual connections and interests. But you can also search for a specific person in the search bar, using the filter tool to narrow the results to as few people as possible.
Some background check services argue that the list of associates in their reports provides a bigger picture of the individual’s credibility. The logic is that if a person’s associate list is filled with people who have criminal records, they are less credible than someone who’s associations are businessmen. However, it’s important to realize these lists are not an accurate representation of the quality of a person’s actual associations. Since these lists are computer generated, much of the context in the relationship is lost.
The categories of criminal conviction contained within the Extract from the Criminal Record includes those involving offences against children, sexual offences, violent offences and narcotics offences. Any other convictions not relating to these categories will not be included on the certificate. The Criminal Record Extract for a Visa Applications contains information pertaining to custodial or suspended sentences, community service, fines, juvenile punishments, and overseas decisions against Finnish citizens or permanent residents.[35]

As background check services turn into subscription services, the temptation for businesses to use the information for employment screening is extremely high. After all, anyone willing to pay around $30 to $50 per month can anonymously view unlimited background reports for as many applicants as they want. And there is little accountability or policing of how you use the information since it's all considered public record.

Stalk anyone, ever. It should go without saying, but using background check services makes it far too easy for people step over the line. Remember, even if you’re trying to reconnect with an old friend or ex-lover, many people don’t want to be contacted and don't realize their contact information is out there. As such, you should never use the information to do the following:

We’re big fans of free - so if you’re looking for one or two pieces of information, it might be worth your time to see what’s available first online or in your local courthouse. Online background check services really shine in two ways. They spend a fortune sucking up all the data available, something that might take you years or you might not even be able to accomplish with a limited budget at all. They’re also really good at collecting all the specific information and creating a really detailed report. Generally speaking we’ve found the relatively low cost to be worth the information provided and the sheer time and effort saved on our part.


Free criminal records are all over the internet, but they are not created all equal. There are many sites that offer free information, including government and public offices and there are many sites too that offer fee-based checks. The general guideline is if time, convenience and professional quality is of the essence, go with the paid version. But before hopping onto any one of those, you may want to consider taking reference from some of the review sites. Their selections are generally accurate and well-substantiated. The rest is up to you.
A person can obtain a copy of their criminal history from the National Criminal Register, by contacting the central information office of the KRK in Warsaw, or information points of the KRK located within Polish common courts.[84] In order to receive a copy of your criminal record, you must complete a form, stating the reasons for your request, and pay a fee (in July 2018: 20PLN for a digital copy, or 30PLN for a paper copy). All of these are public records and are open to public access and review. Investigative work or background checks normally include criminal records in one way or another. Hence, it would be good for police work, neighborhood watch or perhaps for social background checks.
As a general rule, employers may not take adverse action against an applicant or employee (not hiring or terminating them), solely on the basis of results obtained through a database search. Database searches, as opposed to source records searches (search of actual county courthouse records), are notoriously inaccurate, contain incomplete or outdated information, and should only be used as an added safety net when conducting a background check. Failure by employers to follow FCRA guidelines can result in hefty penalties.[18]
