The amount of information included on a background check depends to a large degree on the sensitivity of the reason for which it is conducted—e.g., somebody seeking employment at a minimum wage job would be subject to far fewer requirements than somebody applying to work for a law enforcement agency such as the FBI or jobs related to national security.
We also considered how current the reports were. We saw a wide range in the results. Most had current addresses, though one of our subjects had moved recently, and the most recent address wasn’t in the reports – you can expect a small lag if there have been recent changes. Some of the lower scoring services had addresses our subjects hadn’t lived at for more than a decade.
However, Nick Clements argues in "Should Identity Theft Really Scare You?" that you shouldn’t necessarily lose sleep about it. While identity theft is on the rise, the vast majority of the cases are reported as account takeovers – instances where someone uses your financial information to make purchases or gains entry into and takes over an account. These are, according to Clements, nothing to worry about. Since this kind of identity theft is common enough, banks and financial institutions are very good at making things right, so long as you report the fraud as soon as possible. In fact, 96 percent of people who experienced identity theft never had to pay a dime.

The Louisiana Computerized Criminal History system is also maintained by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information and contains arrest, disposition and incarceration information on individuals who have been arrested in the state of Louisiana. This system also contains information on individuals who have applied for certain positions which require a fingerprint based background check.

Many background check website services advertise their background check, court records, and other services as free services. However, to compile an arrest record report or any other background check report for that manner, costs money. There is always a free when you pull an arrest record report. The search may be free, but in order to pull a complete report, you will have to sign up for a membership. Arrest Records can be obtained for free on your own, but requires a lot of work to find the appropriate court records, or arrest records you are looking for. Arrest records can show up on background check reports when you perform a people search or a background check on someone. Convictions, felonies and other related court documents may also show up on a background check report, but this varies from person to person.
The prison system in the United States holds inmates who have committed felony crimes under state laws and violated the constitution. People who have committed less serious offenses get a different form of punishment in accordance to the crime they committed, such as community work, probation or restitution. Felony offenders go to prison, and as of today, there are over 2.2 million prisoners in the United States.
With online, criminal record search can be conducted at any hour, 24/7, and anywhere as long as internet access is available. These are important factors because such checks often require immediacy. It can get touchy too. If we’re just acting on a hunch about someone, it goes without saying that we should not be too public about it. Fortunately, online search allows us to search from the privacy of our home or office, greatly reducing the probability of being caught in the act.

If it's very important that the background check be completely accurate, you may want to consider hiring a private investigator. However, most of the time, such background investigations are reserved for high-level pre-employment investigations, executive-level background checks and board-of-director confirmations, according to the Diligentia Group, a New York-based private investigation firm.

When police take a person into custody, he or she is under arrest. The arrest can happen following an investigation or immediately after a crime is committed. Law enforcement agencies across the United States keep detailed arrest records that contain the criminal history of individuals who committed crimes. A document that details a person's history is called an Arrest Record, or a Criminal Record.
In Broken Records, a report on the problems with background checks, the National Consumer Law Center reported that Samuel M. Jackson was allegedly denied employment based on a felony conviction. However, according to the background check, the felony occurred when Jackson was just four years old. In truth, the report misattributed the crime because his name was similar to the actual felon's. Such inaccuracies, according the report, are widespread with background check services because of an “industry-wide lack of accountability” and incentive to “cut corners” in how they collect and attribute information.

The company’s new service, launching today, is called Better Future. It’s an extension of Checkr’s larger mission to help people with criminal backgrounds get jobs. One in three adult Americans has a criminal record, meaning that they either have been arrested on a felony charge (even if they weren’t convicted) or on a misdemeanor charge that a state agency has requested the FBI keep on file, Politifact reported last year.
There are 4 levels of standard criminal record checks—levels 1 to 4. Level 1 is the most basic check and level 4 being the most extensive. Criminal record checks can only be done with the consent of the individual.[14] Due to the sensitive nature of CPIC, only police agencies are authorized to conduct a criminal record check, with the exception of BC Ministry of Justice.[15]

Arrests for felonies, misdemeanors, and both criminal and civil charges are included in the Arrest Record. They may also contain pending warrants, fines, or monetary restitution for an arrest or conviction, and charges that have been dismissed or for which the individual was acquitted. If an arrest led to a conviction, the Arrest Record may list the sentence and any incarceration. An Arrest Record will also show if an individual is on the sex offender registry.
The subject of an identification record may obtain a copy of that record by submitting a written request to the CJIS Division. The request must be accompanied by satisfactory proof of identity (consisting of name, date and place of birth, and a set of rolled-inked fingerprint impressions) and a certified check or money order for the current processing fee. The FBI will not provide copies of arrest records to individuals other than the subject of the record. Requests should be directed to the FBI CJIS Division, Attn: SCU, Mod. D-2, 1000 Custer Hollow Rd., Clarksburg, West Virginia 26306. If there is no criminal record, a report reflecting this fact is provided. See www.FBI.gov for current processing fees and further information, See also Identification Record Request and Guide for Obtaining Your FBI Identification Record; Submitting an Identification Record Request to the FBI.
